Bilan de l'action de remise en eau du marais de kervijen (Littoral de la Baie de Douarnenez) dans le cadre d'une lutte contre la marée verte. ArchiMer
Piriou, Jean-yves.
ln order to limit the excessive growth of macroalgae Ulva sp. on the beach of Kervijen (Bay of Douarnenez, Brittany, France), a field experiment was carried out, whereby part of the flow of a river was diverted into a coastal marsh. Results showed that the major part of spring and summer, Ulva proliferations have been suppressed. Part of the nitrate transported by river flow was consumed. The coastal marsh produced phytoplankton which regularly flowed on the beach

Bio-physiological response of biofilter algal candidate Ulva sp. to different nitrogen forms and fluxes ArchiMer
Moustafa, Yasser T. A.; Bougaran, Gael; Callier, Myriam; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The present study was carried out to study the long term effect of different nitrogen forms and concentrations (14.3, 28.6 and 57.1 µM N-NH4 and 214, 2360 and 3700 µM N-NO3) on the photosynthesis and relative growth rate (RGR) of Ulva sp. for five weeks. Nutrient-enriched seawater was supplied at an exchange rate of between 12.6 and 14.4 volumes per day. Relative growth rate was determined weekly. Photosynthetic oxygen evolution response was measured using 20 - 25 mg fresh weight seaweed incubated in a DW3 measuring chamber for 56 min under different irradiances with light and dark periods alternating every seven minutes. Photosynthetic light-response curves were drawn using 15 photosynthetic oxygen evolution readings normalized to dry weight. Experimental...

Cultivar-specific and ulvan-induced resistance of apple plants to Glomerella leaf spot are associated with enhanced activity of peroxidases - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v35i3.16174 Agronomy
Araujo, Leonardo; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Stadnik, Marciel João; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.
Glomerella leaf spot (GLS) is an important disease of apple plants, and the use of the algal polysaccharide ulvan represents a new technology for its control. This study aimed to verify whether the defense mechanisms involved in cultivar-specific and ulvan-induced plant resistance to GLS are associated with changes in the activities of peroxidase and β-1,3-glucanase. Seedlings were first sprayed with ulvan or water and then inoculated with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [W1] 6 days later. The disease severity was recorded daily on both young and old leaves up to 10 days after inoculation, and the enzyme activities were monitored from 24 to 72h after inoculation (HAI). Although the young leaves were more susceptible to GLS, ulvan reduced approximately 66%...

Domaine d’application et validation des grilles d’évaluation de la qualité des masses d’eau côtières et de transition élaborées dans le cadre de la DCE. Elément de qualité biologique «macroalgues opportunistes» ArchiMer
Rossi, Nadège.
In the context of the WFD, the assessment of the coastal water bodies and transition is required from different biological parameters including opportunistic macroalgae. This implies on the one hand the development of appropriate methods and the other hand controlling that the environmental quality is established in connection with an identified pressure. This assessment is currently based on monitoring of opportunistic green macroalgae. Nevertheless, massive developments of other algae, including Pylaiella littoralis and Gracilaria sp. may be involved in some water bodies. Given all these information, the study shows:  - The three tools for assessing the ecological quality of water bodies set up in response to the three types of green tides identified on...

In situ growth potential of the subtidal part of green tide forming Ulva spp. stocks ArchiMer
Merceron, Michel; Antoine, Virginie; Auby, Isabelle; Morand, P.
Ulva spp., the algae most responsible for green tides in Brittany (France), are found on the foreshore and in the most beachward wave area (MBWA) of many bays during green tide phenomena. These algae have recently been seen drifting at greater depths (reaching -20 m). In view of the significant quantities of algae found at these depths, and the less favorable conditions for algal growth than in the intertidal zone, we attempted to determine if they could grow there. For that, during their maximum growth period (from May to July), algae were picked up at three stations located on the foreshore, in the MBWA and in the subtidal (deep) zones of the Bay of Douarnenez, and their nitrogen, carbon and chlorophyll a+b contents were determined, and their...
